The naturally aspirated Jaguar AJ-V8 engine produces 290 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. It is coupled to an electronically controlled ZF five-speed automatic transmission that includes driver-selectable Sport and Normal shift modes; switching into Sport mode times gearchanges for peak
response. This Jaguar transmission also has self-regulating adaptive capability, which compensates automatically for aging and adjusts shift quality based on slippage detected in actual use.
For the Jaguar XJR, the supercharged and intercooled version of the same 32-valve alloy powerplant produces no less than 370 horsepower and an abundant 387 pound-feet of torque. Its effortless acceleration C 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds (0 to 100 kph in 5.7 seconds) C positions the XJR among the world's quickest production luxury sedans. To accommodate the greater torque, the XJR has a Mercedes-Benz five-speed electronic automatic transmission that is lightweight, yet very rigid.
An advanced drive-by-wire throttle management system, also based on technology pioneered in the Jaguar XK8, balances engine responsiveness and driving comfort. Among other benefits, the electronic throttle enables all XJ sedans to be fitted with standard Automatic Stability Control, which inhibits wheelspin on slippery roads by controlling the ignition, fuel injection and throttle.
